  • Task 1 - What is a Topology? Click to see more

A network is two or more nodes that are connected together, by a path.

    What ia Topology

    Lets try the following tasks:

Tick each task when you have successfully done it in the following list:

    Complete the following tasks

Open your powerpoint from last lesson
Add another slide to your powerpoint with the title 'What is a network topolgy'
In your own words define the term ‘network topology

At the bottom of the topology slide in your PowerPoint

  • Define the word ‘node’

  • Task 2 - The Bus Topology Click to see more

A network topology refers to how computers are connected to a network. There are three main types of network topologies: Bus, Ring and Star.

    The Bus Network

In a bus network all the workstations, servers and printers are joined to one cable (the bus). At each end of the cable a terminator is fitted to stop signals reflecting back down the bus.

    Bus
Bus Lets try the following tasks:

Tick each task when you have successfully done it in the following list:

    Complete the following tasks

Add another slide to your powerpoint with the title 'Bus Network '
Add a description of what a Bus Network is and where it is used
Create a table with two columns, at the top of one write advantages on the other write disadvantages
See if you can write one advantage and one disadvantage of a Bus Network

Task 3 - The Star Topology Click to see more

    The Star Network

In a star network each device on the network has its own cable that connects to a switch or hub. A hub sends every packet of data to every device, whereas a switch only sends a packet of data to the destination device.

Tick each task when you have successfully done it in the following list:

    Complete the following tasks

Add another slide to your powerpoint with the title 'Star Network '
Add a description of what a Star Network is and where it is used
Create a table with two columns, at the top of one write advantages on the other write disadvantages
See if you can write one advantage and one disadvantage of a Star Network

Task 4 - The Ring Topology Click to see more

    The Ring Network

A ring topology is a network configuration where device connections create a circular data path. Each networked device is connected to two others, like points on a circle. Together, devices in a ring topology are referred to as a ring network.

Ring network Lets try the following tasks:

Tick each task when you have successfully done it in the following list:

    Complete the following tasks

Add another slide to your powerpoint with the title 'Ring Network '
Add a description of what a Ring Network is and where it is used
Create a table with two columns, at the top of one write advantages on the other write disadvantages
See if you can write one advantage and one disadvantage of a Ring Network

Task 5 - The Worlds Biggest Network Topology Click to see more

What type of network is the World wide web?

    Lets try the following tasks:

Tick each task when you have successfully done it in the following list:

    Complete the following tasks

Go to the slide in your powerpoint called 'the worlds biggest network'
Explain what type of network it is
Find a picture for that type of network and add it to your slide

Task 6 - Update your learning objective Click to see more

    Summing it all up

Lets look at the learning outcomes and decide which one best describes our current level of understanding :

Tick the one you feel is closest to your level

Learning Outcomes I need to learn how to explain what a network topology is and give examples of three different types

    • I have a basic understanding of how I can explain what a network topology is and give examples of three different types with a little help from my teacher
    • I can show my teacher that I can explain what a network topology is and give examples of three different types without their help.
    • I can explain what a network topology is and give examples of three different types independently and I can also explain it to others and can complete any extension tasks I am given.
